Welfare Considerations

Hamsters kept in small cages with unsuitable wheels show stereotypic bar-chewing and repetitive pacing that indicate chronic frustration. Guinea pigs kept alone without a companion conspecific suffer social deprivation. The gap between available science on small rodent welfare and common practice is large and relatively easy to close with better consumer education and retail standards.

Research the welfare needs of any small rodent before purchasing or adopting one
Provide the largest possible enclosure — several square feet at minimum for hamsters
Ensure your hamster has a solid-surface wheel at least 28cm in diameter
Guinea pigs require at least one companion — never house them alone
Advocate for pet stores to sell only welfare-appropriate starter cages and equipment
