The relationship between animal welfare and food security is real but navigable. In high-income countries, higher-welfare animal products compete with lower-welfare versions for consumer budgets — but reduced consumption rather than welfare regression is the welfare-compatible response to cost pressures. In food-insecure contexts, animal products play important nutritional roles, and welfare improvements must be achieved gradually alongside food security gains. The framing that welfare and food security are zero-sum is often used to resist welfare progress in contexts where the resources and alternatives exist. Nuanced, context-sensitive analysis produces better outcomes than either blanket dismissal of welfare concerns or indifference to food security.
