Welfare Considerations

Swift chick welfare is entirely dependent on parental care quality and nest site conditions. Food availability peaks in warm settled weather when aerial insects are abundant and plummets in cold wet periods that may last weeks. Chicks enter torpor during food scarcity, reducing metabolic demand. Overheating in poorly positioned nest boxes causes dehydration and death before adults can provide water in flight. North or east-facing boxes at appropriate heights provide optimal thermal conditions. Grounded chicks that have fallen from nests can be returned by climbing to the entrance — this is one of the most effective direct welfare interventions available to the public.
