Escaped farmed mink establish wild populations in the UK. Comparing their welfare in wild and captive contexts informs both fur farm and wildlife management policy.
The contrast between farmed mink welfare and wild or rehabilitation mink welfare illustrates the depth of deprivation in cage systems. Wild mink express their full behavioural repertoire including swimming, denning, hunting and territory defence. Farmed mink in wire cages have no access to any of these behaviours. Rehabilitation mink that are successfully released experience immediate improvement in welfare-relevant behaviours even in the challenging circumstances of novel wild environments. This welfare contrast strengthens the scientific case for fur farming prohibition while also highlighting the ecological challenge of managing wild invasive mink populations.
