Sea lice infestation is a major welfare and production challenge in salmon aquaculture. Treatment methods vary widely in their welfare impacts on fish.
Sea lice cause genuine welfare harm through tissue damage, osmotic disruption and immune suppression. Chemical treatments, while effective, also cause handling stress and some direct toxicity to fish. Mechanical treatments like warm water and laser targeting reduce chemical use but carry their own welfare costs. Integrated pest management minimizing both lice burden and treatment stress represents best welfare practice.
