Feline acromegaly caused by excess growth hormone from a pituitary tumor affects a significant proportion of diabetic cats. Recognition and treatment improve insulin resistance and welfare.
Undiagnosed acromegaly in diabetic cats causes continued hyperglycemia despite intensive insulin therapy, with associated complications including cataracts, neuropathy and infections. The recognition that apparent insulin resistance may have a treatable pituitary cause transforms the welfare prognosis. Radiation therapy achieves remission in many cats allowing dramatic reduction in insulin requirements and improved quality of life.
