Electronic sow feeding (ESF) systems allow group housing of pregnant sows while providing individual feeding. Understanding their welfare advantages and limitations informs better practice.
ESF systems represent a significant welfare improvement over gestation crates by allowing sow movement, social interaction and expression of natural behavior. However, poorly managed ESF systems can expose subordinate sows to persistent aggression and stress around feeding stations. Adequate space, stable group composition and provision of additional resources like wallowing areas and rooting material optimize welfare in group systems.
