Rain scald (Dermatophilus congolensis) causes painful skin lesions on horses exposed to prolonged wet conditions. Prevention and prompt treatment protect horse welfare during wet seasons.
Rain scald causes skin discomfort and sensitivity particularly when scabs are disturbed during grooming or when tack contacts affected areas. Horses with rain scald may be reluctant to be groomed or saddled. Prevention through provision of shelter, appropriate rugging and regular coat inspection during wet weather prevents the welfare impact of established infection. Prompt treatment when lesions are detected prevents spread and worsening.
