Amphibian welfare in captivity presents unique challenges from the extreme diversity of species needs and the limited welfare science available for this group. Environmental mismatches cause physiological stress and disease susceptibility that are often difficult to recognize before animals are severely compromised. The conservation importance of many captive amphibian collections creates additional complexity in management decisions. Investment in amphibian welfare science and husbandry expertise is urgently needed given the conservation role captive collections increasingly play for threatened species.
