Pressure wraps including Thundershirts are widely used for dog anxiety but have variable evidence for efficacy, with welfare-conscious use requiring realistic expectations and integration with behavioral support.
Pressure wraps represent a low-risk welfare intervention with variable but sometimes meaningful benefit for anxious dogs. The welfare case for their use is supported by the absence of adverse effects and the potential for genuine anxiety reduction in responsive individuals. However, over-reliance on pressure wraps without addressing behavioral causes of anxiety provides inadequate welfare support for moderately to severely anxious dogs. Used as part of a comprehensive behavioral support plan, they can contribute meaningfully to anxiety management without replacing professional behavioral intervention.
