Pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID, formerly Cushings disease) is common in older horses and ponies. Early diagnosis and treatment dramatically improves welfare outcomes.
PPID causes progressive deterioration in horse welfare through multiple mechanisms. Abnormal cortisol regulation leads to muscle loss, immunosuppression, increased susceptibility to infection, and the development of laminitis. The classic hypertrichosis causes thermoregulatory problems in warm weather. Most significantly, laminitis in PPID horses can be severe and unrelenting. Early diagnosis through annual ACTH testing of horses over 15 years allows treatment before serious complications develop. Many horses on appropriate pergolide treatment enjoy significantly improved quality of life.
