Polar bears have extensive natural ranges and specialized behavioral needs that make captive welfare challenging. Modern zoo management increasingly questions whether polar bears can have adequate welfare in captivity.
Polar bear welfare in captivity presents one of the most challenging cases in zoo animal management. The extreme disparity between wild home ranges and zoo enclosure sizes cannot be bridged regardless of enclosure complexity. Stereotypic pacing behaviors, present in virtually all zoo polar bears, are a reliable indicator of chronic stress and poor welfare. The complexity of natural polar bear behavior including hunting, swimming through pack ice, and traveling vast distances cannot be approximated in captivity. A growing number of welfare-focused zoos have decided that polar bear welfare cannot be adequately met and have retired their exhibits. Conservation funding may be better directed to wild habitat protection.
