Millions of aquarium fish are kept in conditions far below their welfare needs — but the science of fish welfare is increasingly informing better home fishkeeping practices.
Home aquarium fish welfare is poorly understood by most keepers, resulting in widespread suffering in undersized tanks with inadequate water quality. Fish are cognitively complex animals with needs for appropriate space, water conditions, and in many species social companions. The common goldfish bowl provides neither adequate space nor appropriate temperature regulation. Tropical fish in cold tanks suffer chronic physiological stress. Betta fish kept in tiny containers cannot thermo-regulate and show stereotypic behaviors indicating behavioral frustration. Better consumer education at point of sale and honest labeling of welfare requirements would transform home fish welfare outcomes.
