The ability to root is so fundamental to pig behavioral motivation that provision of outdoor rooting areas addresses one of the most significant welfare deficits in conventional pig farming. However, outdoor production carries disease risks including erysipelas and parasites, and the environmental impact of intensive outdoor systems on soil and waterways is a separate concern. The wider adoption of meaningful indoor enrichment represents a more scalable welfare improvement for the majority of UK pigs.
