Ataxia causes significant functional impairment and, in acute onset cases, is extremely frightening for both dogs and owners. Dogs cannot understand why they suddenly cannot walk normally and the disorientation of vestibular disease is particularly distressing. Accurate localization of the neurological lesion through clinical examination determines the appropriate investigation and treatment pathway. Old dog vestibular disease, while appearing severe, typically resolves substantially within days to weeks and has an excellent prognosis. By contrast, cerebellar or spinal cord disease may be progressive and have more guarded welfare outlooks. Appropriate supportive care and environmental modification during the acute phase protects welfare regardless of underlying cause.
