Regular positive human contact with pigs during rearing significantly improves welfare outcomes, reduces fear responses, and has production benefits — making it a high-value welfare intervention.
The human-pig relationship quality is a major and often overlooked determinant of pig welfare. Pigs that fear humans show elevated chronic stress hormones, avoidance behaviors, and reduced welfare across their lives. Conversely, pigs that have experienced regular positive human interaction from early in life are calmer, less reactive to routine husbandry, and show behavioral indicators of positive emotional states. Improving stockperson behavior — replacing aversive handling (shouting, stick use, rushing) with calm, slow, positive interaction — is one of the cheapest and most effective welfare interventions available. It requires attitude and skill, not capital investment.
