Elbow hygroma is a fluid-filled swelling caused by repeated trauma to the elbow. Prevention through appropriate bedding is straightforward and avoids a painful chronic condition.
Hygromas represent an entirely preventable welfare problem. The transition from a painless early hygroma to a chronically inflamed, infected, painful lesion happens gradually, and owners often fail to intervene at the right stage. Infected hygromas cause significant ongoing pain and restrict normal movement. Preventing them through simple environmental modification costs nothing compared to the welfare benefit.
