Cattle spend weeks in high-density conditions on vessels, unable to move freely, exposed to extreme heat in tropical shipping lanes, and vulnerable to respiratory disease spreading rapidly through stressed, immunocompromised animals. Mortality events during export have been documented at scale. The welfare case for replacing live export with chilled or frozen meat trade is strong — it eliminates the long-distance welfare burden entirely while allowing equivalent or better economic outcomes.
