Parvovirus causes devastating illness in unvaccinated dogs. Understanding how to prevent this disease protects dogs from unnecessary suffering.
Parvovirus causes extraordinary suffering. Affected dogs experience profuse bloody diarrhea, vomiting, severe abdominal pain, and systemic collapse. Without intensive treatment, most die within days in significant distress. Treatment itself involves hospitalization, intravenous access, and days of intensive care that are stressful for already critically ill puppies. Almost all of this suffering is entirely preventable through vaccination. The welfare case for universal puppy vaccination is overwhelming.
