Neutered male cats are at increased risk of urethral obstruction. Understanding prevention and emergency recognition can prevent a life-threatening welfare emergency.
Urethral obstruction causes acute, intense suffering through bladder distension, uremic poisoning, and metabolic crisis. Without emergency treatment, affected cats die painfully. The distress of a cat in urethral obstruction is visible and extreme — they are clearly in severe pain. Prevention through diet and stress management reduces but does not eliminate risk; owner recognition of the emergency signs and immediate veterinary response is the critical welfare safety net.
