Dog Separation Anxiety Prevention in Puppies

Separation anxiety is one of the most common and distressing behavioral problems in dogs. Prevention through appropriate early socialization and alone-time training is far easier than cure.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Separation anxiety causes profound suffering — affected dogs exist in a state of panic when left alone, which can last for hours. The behavior problems that result (destruction, soiling, self-harm) are symptoms of genuine distress, not deliberate misbehavior. The owner distress from returning to damaged homes and neighbor complaints compounds the situation. Prevention through planned, gradual alone-time training in puppyhood is extraordinarily more effective than treatment of established anxiety and should be universal practice.
