Pleasure horse welfare involves a distinctive challenge: horses kept as companions by caring owners can nonetheless experience significant welfare deprivation through housing and management practices that prioritize human convenience over equine behavioral needs. Single stabling without adequate turnout, supplementary grain-heavy diets, and social isolation all compromise welfare. Equipment misfit causing pain is common and often unrecognized. The Equine Pain Face and other validated behavioral indicators enable more accurate pain assessment, but are not yet widely known outside equine welfare circles. Committed owners who prioritize welfare can provide genuinely good horse lives, but need access to welfare science information.
