Gorillas are cognitively sophisticated primates with complex social and behavioral needs. Meeting these needs in captivity requires exceptional investment and expertise.
Gorilla welfare in captivity carries the same fundamental challenges as other great apes — the gap between their evolved complexity and any captive environment is enormous. Cardiovascular disease affecting captive male gorillas at rates far higher than wild populations suggests chronic stress as a significant contributing factor. The behavioral indicator of welfare compromise (R/R) is prevalent in many facilities. Only exceptional facilities with large, complex environments, expert social management, and genuine behavioral welfare monitoring provide acceptable welfare for gorillas.
