Leptospirosis is a serious bacterial disease that can cause fatal kidney and liver failure in dogs, and vaccination is the primary means of prevention.

Welfare Considerations

Leptospirosis causes intense suffering through fever, severe muscle pain, vomiting, jaundice, and progressive organ failure. Dogs may deteriorate rapidly over 24-48 hours, and even with aggressive treatment including hospitalization and dialysis, mortality rates can reach 50%. The disease is particularly cruel because it is largely preventable through vaccination. Dogs in high-risk environments who are not vaccinated suffer unnecessarily when infection occurs.

What You Can Do

Vaccinate your dog against leptospirosis, including against multiple serovars where available
Keep annual booster vaccinations current, as leptospirosis immunity wanes faster than other vaccines
Avoid letting your dog drink from standing water, puddles, or slow-moving streams
Be especially vigilant in autumn when rainfall concentrates leptospires in surface water
Seek emergency veterinary care if your dog develops sudden fever, vomiting, jaundice, or extreme lethargy
Inform your vet if your dog has recently been in water or near areas with high rodent activity
