Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) causes acute and often severe pain and neurological dysfunction in dogs, requiring prompt recognition and appropriate management to minimize suffering.
IVDD causes acute, severe pain that can be profoundly incapacitating. A dog with an IVDD episode may be unable to walk, yelping in pain, or showing signs of extreme discomfort. The welfare imperative is twofold: immediate, adequate pain relief, and prompt decision-making about whether surgery is indicated. Dogs with complete paralysis who do not receive surgery within 24-48 hours have dramatically reduced recovery chances. Delaying treatment due to financial concerns or uncertainty about prognosis directly extends unnecessary suffering.
