A pig kept in a barren concrete pen without rooting material is experiencing significant behavioral frustration. The motivation to root is not a preference but a biological drive — pigs deprived of rooting opportunities develop stress behaviors, redirect rooting onto pen-mates (causing injury), and show physiological stress indicators. Providing straw or other manipulable substrate is one of the highest-impact, lowest-cost welfare interventions in pig farming. The fact that chain-on-a-rope is widely considered compliant with enrichment requirements illustrates how far minimum standards remain from meaningful welfare.
