Urolithiasis (kidney and bladder stones) in dogs causes significant pain and recurrent urinary problems, and dietary management is central to both treatment and prevention.
Urinary stones cause significant welfare harms including chronic pain from urinary tract irritation, acute pain during passage attempts, potential life-threatening obstruction, and the distress of invasive procedures including surgery. Dogs with recurrent stone formation may experience multiple surgical procedures over their lifetime. The welfare impact is chronic and cumulative. Dietary management that prevents stone formation therefore has high welfare value, but requires sustained owner commitment to prescription feeding without deviation.
