Welfare Considerations

Early hygromas are cosmetic concerns; advanced or infected hygromas cause genuine pain and require extensive, invasive treatment that is far more costly and welfare-compromising than the bedding that would have prevented them. This is a clear example of a welfare problem where owner behavior is the direct cause and the solution.

What You Can Do

Provide thick, supportive orthopedic bedding for all large and giant breed dogs at all resting locations in the home
Use egg-crate foam, memory foam, or similar padding under thin dog beds to ensure adequate joint protection
Monitor the elbows of large breed dogs regularly for early hygroma development
If early hygromas are present, increase padding immediately — many resolve with adequate bedding provision
Never drain hygromas yourself and avoid draining procedures that risk introducing infection
Seek veterinary advice for any hygroma that is warm, painful, or showing skin breakdown — this indicates infection requiring treatment
