The welfare dimensions of porcupine-dog encounters affect both species. Dogs experience significant pain from quill penetration, infection risk, and the trauma of veterinary quill removal. Porcupines may be injured during the encounter and temporarily lack protective quills during regrowth. Human-wildlife conflict around porcupines causing property damage or dog injuries sometimes leads to lethal control, which is both welfare-compromising and often ineffective as other individuals move into the vacant territory.
