Cat FIP: Neurological and Ocular Forms

Neurological and ocular FIP present additional welfare challenges requiring prompt recognition and modified treatment protocols for optimal outcomes.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Neurological and ocular FIP cause welfare harms beyond the systemic disease effects that affect other FIP forms. Neurological FIP may cause seizures, which are distressing events causing fear and confusion; ataxia prevents normal movement and causes falls and instability; behavioral changes may include aggression or withdrawal that affects the cat-owner relationship. Ocular involvement causes pain from uveitis inflammation and potential blindness. These welfare harms compound the systemic effects of the disease and increase the urgency of treatment. Recognition of neuro-FIP signs as welfare emergencies motivating immediate treatment should be part of owner education for cats diagnosed with FIP.
