Osteosarcoma causes severe bone pain in dogs. Welfare-focused management prioritizes effective pain control and honest quality-of-life assessment throughout the disease course.
Osteosarcoma welfare management is dominated by two challenges: the severity of bone pain and the inevitability of progression. Untreated, osteosarcoma causes escalating agony from pathological fracture, cortical bone destruction, and tumor swelling. Amputation is primarily a pain-relief intervention, not a cure — and this framing helps owners focus appropriately on their dog's comfort. Dogs tolerate triplegia remarkably well and often show dramatic behavioral improvement post-amputation. The welfare question is not whether to amputate but whether adequate pain relief can be achieved and maintained.
