Free-range egg systems vary enormously in actual welfare outcomes. Understanding what genuinely improves hen welfare beyond the label helps consumers make effective choices.
Free-range certification does not automatically translate to high welfare — the gap between certified conditions and actual welfare outcomes is significant. Hens may have access to the outdoors but never use it due to inadequate range design, predator fear, or social competition at pop holes. The behavioral needs of hens — particularly dust bathing, foraging, and perching — must be actively met, not just nominally accessible. Higher-welfare free-range systems that actively measure range use, provide enriched outdoor areas, and maintain smaller flock sizes deliver genuinely better welfare.
