Road mortality is among the leading causes of hedgehog death in the UK and Europe, with hundreds of thousands killed annually. Solutions exist at individual, community, and policy levels.
Road collisions cause acute traumatic suffering — hedgehogs struck by vehicles experience severe blunt force trauma, internal injuries, and often slow death from shock if they are not instantly killed. The cumulative annual death toll represents an enormous quantity of suffering inflicted by preventable human infrastructure. Beyond individual mortality, population-level decline removes hedgehogs from their ecological roles and diminishes the richness of ecosystems. Each hedgehog that reaches reproductive age and breeds successfully represents both an individual welfare success and a contribution to population recovery.
