Many feline behavioral problems — scratching, spraying, aggression — have environmental solutions. Understanding cat ethology guides home modifications that allow natural behavior expression without conflict.
Many behavioral problems in cats are the expression of unmet behavioral needs in environments that do not accommodate feline ethology. Scratching "problems" occur because appropriate scratching targets are absent or in wrong locations. Spraying often indicates a threatened cat defending territory from perceived intruders — real or imagined. Aggression between cats escalates when space, resources, and escape routes are inadequate. The welfare insight is that behavioral problems are symptoms of an environment failing to meet the cat's needs — and that environmental modification addresses root causes while punishment-based approaches address only symptoms while increasing the stress that drives problematic behavior.
