Car travel anxiety is common in dogs and causes real suffering during every journey. Systematic desensitization and, when needed, medication can transform travel from ordeal to routine.
Every car journey for a severely car-anxious dog is a welfare event — panting, drooling, trembling, and vomiting cause genuine distress. Many owners accept this as inevitable, but most car anxiety is treatable. The key is addressing both the physiological component (motion sickness) and the behavioral component (conditioned fear) simultaneously. Dogs who cannot be desensitized through behavior modification alone can benefit significantly from anti-anxiety medications combined with positive experience building. Untreated car anxiety often prevents dogs from accessing veterinary care, creating a welfare problem compounded by medical neglect.
