Canine cognitive dysfunction syndrome (CDS) is an age-related neurological condition analogous to human dementia that causes significant behavioral changes and welfare impacts in older dogs.
Canine CDS profoundly affects quality of life for affected dogs and their families. A dog who wanders at night, gets stuck in corners, or fails to recognize familiar people is experiencing genuine confusion and distress. Owners who attribute these signs to "just getting old" and do not seek veterinary assessment miss opportunities to improve welfare. Modern management — medication, diet change, structured routines, nightlights, and continued gentle enrichment — cannot reverse neurodegeneration but can meaningfully reduce the behavioral manifestations of CDS and improve daily quality of life.
