Sea lice management involves genuine welfare tradeoffs. Infestation causes chronic pain and immune stress. Chemical treatments reduce louse burden but expose fish to toxic compounds. Thermal and mechanical delousing cause acute stress and injury. Wrasse used as cleaner fish face welfare challenges in net pen environments. Land-based recirculating aquaculture systems eliminate lice entirely at much higher cost.
