Dog Cancer Quality of Life Assessment

Cancer is the leading cause of death in older dogs. Assessing and maintaining quality of life during cancer treatment and at end of life is central to compassionate care.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

A cancer diagnosis in a dog creates an immediate welfare challenge: balancing treatment benefit against treatment burden. Chemotherapy in dogs is typically much better tolerated than in humans because doses are calibrated for quality of life rather than maximum tumor kill. The central welfare question throughout cancer care is whether the dog is having more good days than bad ones. Objective quality of life assessment using validated scales, combined with regular vet input, helps owners make informed decisions at each stage — from initiating treatment to transitioning to palliative care to considering euthanasia as a compassionate final gift.
