Farmed Trout Disease Welfare

Disease management in rainbow trout aquaculture significantly affects fish welfare. Understanding common diseases and evidence-based prevention reduces suffering in farmed trout populations.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Disease in farmed trout causes genuine suffering. Fish with bacterial gill disease experience hypoxia and respiratory distress. Furunculosis causes internal hemorrhage and ulceration. PKD causes progressive kidney failure that results in lethargy, pallor, and reduced capacity to swim and feed normally. The challenge in fish welfare is that disease signs are subtle and often not recognized until prevalence is high within a population. Prevention — through vaccination, good water quality management, appropriate stocking density, and biosecurity — is far more welfare-positive than reactive treatment of established disease outbreaks.
