Feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD) encompasses multiple conditions causing urinary signs in cats. Stress management and environmental enrichment are key components of long-term welfare care.
FLUTD causes acute and recurrent pain in affected cats. During an episode of idiopathic cystitis, cats experience bladder pain that causes them to strain repeatedly, often in inappropriate places, crying out or appearing restless. The stress-disease connection creates a problematic cycle: stressors trigger episodes, episodes cause more stress, and without addressing root causes, recurrence is likely. Urethral obstruction in male cats is a true emergency — the bladder fills to dangerous pressure within hours, causing acute pain, toxin accumulation, and cardiac effects that are rapidly fatal without treatment.
