Horse Sarcoid Welfare Management

Equine sarcoids are the most common skin tumor in horses. While not typically life-threatening, they cause significant welfare problems including pain, secondary infection, and treatment complications.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

Sarcoid welfare impact varies dramatically with type and location. A small occult sarcoid on the neck causes little harm. A fibroblastic sarcoid at the girth causes pain with every movement, secondary infection from rubbing, and eventual inability to use the horse. Malevolent sarcoids can cause severe local tissue destruction, chronic pain, and bleeding ulceration. Treatment decision-making is complicated by the fact that aggressive treatment can stimulate more rapid regrowth. Working with a veterinarian experienced in sarcoid management — and accepting that some sarcoids are better left untreated unless they cause welfare compromise — provides the best outcome.
