Understanding which advocacy strategies most effectively reduce animal suffering helps individuals and organizations invest their time and resources for maximum impact.
Effective animal advocacy requires thinking carefully about impact: which interventions, in which contexts, will most reduce animal suffering per unit of effort invested? Research from the effective altruism movement suggests that farmed animal welfare — where numbers are largest and welfare conditions often worst — deserves priority. Within farmed animal advocacy, corporate and legislative campaigns that change system-level conditions outperform individual consumer outreach in scale of impact. This does not mean individual behavior change is irrelevant — it shifts culture and markets — but that combining individual action with systemic advocacy multiplies impact significantly. The most impactful advocates work at multiple levels simultaneously.
