Reptiles are among the most poorly kept companion animals, with chronic welfare failures around temperature, humidity, UV lighting, and appropriate diet causing hidden suffering in millions of pets.
Reptile welfare failures are largely invisible to owners because reptiles mask illness and do not vocalize. Metabolic bone disease, respiratory infections, and organ failure from husbandry mistakes are common. These are chronic, painful conditions. The reptile trade should be reformed to require minimum husbandry education at point of sale, and enclosure size regulations should reflect species needs.
