Indoor cats require deliberate environmental enrichment to meet their behavioral needs. A well-designed indoor environment significantly improves feline mental and physical welfare.
Indoor environments, however comfortable, are inherently restricted compared to the complex, changeable environments cats evolved in. Without deliberate enrichment, indoor cats face a welfare deficit from boredom, frustrated behavioral motivations, and insufficient physical activity. The good news is that effective indoor enrichment is accessible and inexpensive: rotating novel objects, paper bags, and cardboard boxes; puzzle feeders; daily interactive play; window perches with bird feeders outside; and cat-safe herb gardens provide a rich behavioral landscape at minimal cost. Consistent enrichment rotation — preventing habituation — is as important as the enrichment itself.
