Correct hoof balance is fundamental to equine welfare. Imbalanced hooves cause uneven load distribution, joint stress, and predispose horses to lameness and long-term musculoskeletal damage.
Hoof balance is a welfare issue that operates below the threshold of visible lameness for extended periods. A horse with mild but consistent hoof imbalance is not obviously lame, but is experiencing abnormal joint loading and tendon stress that, over time, contributes to joint disease, tendon damage, and lameness. Regular farriery assessment by a skilled, knowledgeable farrier working in collaboration with the horse's veterinarian represents the best welfare protection. When horses show subtle performance changes or mild lameness, the feet should always be part of the early assessment — imbalance is both common and correctable.
