Positive reinforcement (clicker) training offers significant welfare benefits for horses by reducing fear-based compliance and developing genuine willingness and positive emotional states.
Positive reinforcement training represents a welfare-positive evolution in equestrian practice. Traditional horse training using pressure and release achieves results but does so through the motivation to avoid discomfort. This approach works — horses are highly motivated to escape pressure — but the training relationship is built on compliance rather than willing engagement. Positive reinforcement training builds a different relationship: the horse is actively working for rewards rather than to avoid pressure, which creates approach motivation rather than avoidance motivation. Horses trained with significant positive reinforcement components show better emotional indicators during training and are often easier to handle for veterinary and farriery procedures.
