Dog Noise Phobia: Fireworks and Thunderstorms

Noise phobia is one of the most prevalent and undertreated welfare issues in pet dogs, causing intense fear during storms and fireworks events.

Key Facts

Up to 40% of dogs show fear responses to fireworks or thunder, including trembling, hiding, barking, and destructive behaviour
Untreated phobias typically worsen over time, becoming broader in trigger range and more intense
Effective treatments include systematic desensitisation, counter-conditioning, and medication for severe cases
Behavioural interventions such as pheromone diffusers and anxiety wraps provide mild support
Sileo (dexmedetomidine) and anti-anxiety medications offer significant relief for severely affected dogs

Welfare Considerations

Noise phobia causes profound fear and psychological suffering in affected dogs. The panic experienced during fireworks or thunderstorms is genuine and acute, not simply nuisance behaviour. Owners who dismiss or punish fearful responses make the phobia worse. Recognition of the severity of noise phobia and proactive management are essential welfare responsibilities.

What You Can Do

Create a safe hiding space — a covered den with familiar bedding — before anticipated fireworks events
Play desensitisation recordings at low volume during calm periods to gradually reduce sound sensitivity
Consult a vet about situational medications for severely affected dogs on high-risk dates
Never punish fearful behaviour — instead, calmly redirect attention and reward composure when possible
