Human-elephant conflict over crops is a critical welfare and conservation challenge affecting elephant populations and farming communities across Asia and Africa.
Human-elephant conflict causes suffering on both sides. Elephants are killed or injured in retaliation for crop losses that are deeply damaging to vulnerable communities. Elephants also experience chronic stress from living in landscapes fragmented by agriculture, where predictable movement corridors no longer exist. Solutions must address both human livelihood needs and elephant welfare.
