Saddle fit is one of the most critical determinants of ridden horse welfare and is a leading cause of back pain and behavioural problems when inadequate.
Saddle-related back pain is among the most prevalent but underdiagnosed causes of equine suffering in the ridden horse population. Many horses work in pain every ride because saddle fit is assessed infrequently or by unqualified individuals. The horse's difficulty communicating pain means that discomfort often manifests as behavioural problems before physical symptoms emerge, and the behaviour is punished rather than the cause investigated.
