Chronic pain in dogs is widely underrecognised and undertreated, representing a major welfare issue in the pet dog population.
Chronic pain profoundly diminishes quality of life. Dogs with unmanaged arthritis or neuropathic pain experience discomfort with every movement. The stoic nature of many dogs means pain persists without obvious complaint. Owner and veterinary education about the subtle signs of chronic pain, and about the range of effective treatments available, is critical for improving welfare in this population.
